Share your enthusiasm for science at the 1st Annual Thoreau Science Fair—a fun, educational event. Individuals or groups can explore science topics and present their findings. Do an experiment or research an interesting science topic and share what you learn. Additionally, there will be a Sensory-Friendly Exhibit Space for those who would benefit from a quieter place to showcase their project. Scientists are eligible for raffle prizes and everyone receives a door prize!

How To Plan Your Project
Do an experiment or research an interesting topic and share what you learn! You can work alone or with a group.
1. Pick a topic that interests you
Do you like space? Animals? Slime? Electricity? Cooking? Cars? Need ideas? Check the project resources below.
2. Explore your topic in one (or more) of the following ways:
- ASK A QUESTION & COLLECT information (data) that you measure or observe. For example:
- What happens when you put an egg in vinegar for a week?
- What kinds of food do birds like best?
- Which type of catapult works the best?
- What type of slime stretches the farthest?
- MAKE a model or draw a diagram that shows a scientific phenomenon.
- BUILD an apparatus that demonstrates scientific principles.
- RESEARCH, illustrate and explain a scientific wonder.
3. Share your findings with your fellow students!

Safety Rules
- Project approval: All projects must be pre-approved by a safety committee. Any project involving electricity, fire, or hazardous materials must include a detailed safety plan.
- Safe materials: Hazardous chemicals, sharp objects, and high-voltage devices are prohibited. Only materials that are safe for students should be used.
- Dangerous tools: Sharp objects, glass containers, and devices generating high heat, pressure, or electricity must be used with extreme caution under supervision and must be approved by the committee.
- PPE and fire safety: Students must use safety gear, and fire extinguishers must be available with adult supervision.
- Proper handling and disposal: Clear protocols for material disposal and clean-up should be in place.
- Emergency procedures: Ensure plans for emergency contacts, safe exit paths, and volunteer briefings on fire extinguishers and electrical hazards are set.
